Bernard Tomic rallies past Michael Berrer to reach round two – Rogers Cup 2012
Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, got the better of the German qualifier, Michael Berrer, in a three-set thriller at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Monday. He summed up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory against the world number 131 to secure a spot in the second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Masters 1000 event taking place in Toronto, Canada.
The Aussie teenager stayed focused throughout the battle to carve out the victory in two hours and four minutes. After bagging the match in their first battle against each other, Tomic not only took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the 32-year-old but also progressed into the second round at this outdoor hard court tournament.
Tomic entered the Rexall Centre in high spirits. He cashed in the lone break chance to draw the first blood in the fourth game, eventually leaping to a 4-1 lead. The Aussie then held his composure and plucked remaining serves, subsequently clicking the opener with a 6-3 win.
The left-hander from Germany refocused in the follow-up set. He brushed off both breakpoints he faced to keep his entire serves. Berrer got the breakthrough in the sixth game and as a result, he bagged the equaliser with a 6-3 success.
Ranked 49th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Tomic re-gained his strength in the final set. He blocked the lone breakpoint he faced to keep his entire serves. The teenager capitalised on one out of two break chances to pocket the decider by winning six games to three.
After stealing the limelight, Tomic not only set up date with the top seed, Novak Djokovic, but also snapped out from a seven match losing streak. Prior to this match, the Aussie did not win a match since exiting from the second round at the Roland Garros.
Viktor Troicki from Serbia will accompany Tomic in the second round. He fended off late resistance to outsmart Russia’s Alex Bogomolov Jr. with a 6-4, 7-6(5) score line in one hour and 49 minutes. The Serb fired 16 aces and broke his opponent’s serve four times to dominate.
