Bernard Tomic rallies past Yen-Hsun Lu to reach the second round – Rogers Cup 2011
Entered as a wildcard in the tournament, Bernard Tomic of Australia won his clash against the unseeded Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei in the opening round of Rogers Cup on Monday.
The competition was staged on the hard courts of the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada, with the 18-year-old Aussie competitor winning the contest in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-3. Tomic took one hour and forty three minutes of play to dispose of the Taiwanese veteran from the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Master Series event in style.
Lu competed well in the contest but tend to lose his focus on crucial moments of the game to allow his opponent take the better of him. He hung in the opening set to drag it into the tie breaker round but failed to pose ample resistance in the second set, letting Tomic away with a comprehensive victory.
The Aussie delivered his 60 per cent of serve on target and clinched 42 out of 55 first serve points, while Lu lagged far behind with 25 out of 39 points in the matchup. The Taiwanese had a total of 10 break opportunities in the contest but he cashed in merely two of them to finish the game on the losing side. Tomic’s amazing ability of bagging crucial points was phenomenal in the game and he secured three out of four break points en route to victory.
The wildcard was off to a flyer in the opening set, as he broke his opponent in his very first game to race away to 3-0 lead early in the game. Tomic collected 25 out of 30 first serve points in the opener and his opponent followed him with 15 out of his 21. Lu managed to crack in his first serve break of the day in the seventh game and then held his serve till the scores got dead locked at 6-6 to enforce a tie breaker round into play.
Tomic got hold of the tie breaker and closed out the opening set with a mini-break at 7-6(5). The Aussie teenager carried on his belligerence in the following set, which took off with a trade of serve breaks from both men right at the beginning. Another timely break point conversion from Tomic marked an end to the contest at 6-3, letting him a chance to compete against the 13th seeded Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in the second round of Rogers Cup.
