Bernard Tomic ready to repeat his last year’s performance at the Wimbledon – Tennis News
Australia’s tennis sensation, Bernard Tomic, is confident that he can reach the second week of the Wimbledon Championships for second year in a row.
Playing at the grass courts of Wimbledon Championships for the third time, the 19-year-old came through the qualifying rounds and stunned some of the top players on the ATP World Tour to advance to the last eight. That was truly
a breakthrough performance by the teenager.
Tomic downed former world number three, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 7-5 in the opener. He needed five sets to topple another Russian, Igor Andreev, 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 in the second round. The Australian
made the biggest surprise of the tournament in the next match, as he upset the then world number five, Robin Soderling, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 32. In the fourth round, he defeated Belgium’s Xavier Malisse with almost similar score line
6-1, 7-5, 6-4. Tomic was finally stopped by the eventual champion, Novak Djokovic, in a four set thriller 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 5-7 in the quarter-finals.
Playing his last event before the third Grand Slam of the season, the Australian was forced to retire with illness against Germany’s Tommy Haas in the first round of the Gerry Weber Open.
Tomic said, talking to the media before the start of Wimbledon, "I'm really excited. Grass is always for me my favourite surface. I feel like I can do like I did last year and being sick last week when Tommy won the tournament
is a good sign too."
Commenting on his unusual style of play, he said, "You have to play differently on it. Eighty, 90 per cent of the tour is guys that love to play on the clay. They play on hard court as well and they get to the grass courts and
they choke up. That's why they struggle against my game.”
The Australian is drawn to take on fellow youngster, David Goffin of Belgium, in the first round.
