Bernard Tomic thrashes Michael Yani in the opening round – US Open 2011
Featuring in the main draw for the first time, upcoming Australian Bernard Tomic, ranked 60th in the world, defeated world number 206 Michael Yani of USA in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of US Open at
the Flushing Meadows in New York on Monday. The Australian took an hour and 50 minutes to beat the American in a one-sided match.
Tomic made a strong start in the first set as he broke the American in the fourth and sixth game, holding his own service games to race to a 5-1 lead. Yani claimed a single break back, winning Tomic’s service game in the seventh
game and holding his own serve in the next game to reduce the deficit to 3-5. However, Yani could not pull the second break of serve back as Tomic served out the set at 5-3.
The Australian fired four aces and grabbed eleven of the seventeen first service points in the opening set. The right-handed hit four winners and capitalised on two of the three break point opportunities he created on the American’s
serve in the first set.
Tomic and Yani put on a serving display in the first eight games of the second set, holding their serves easily to equalise the score at 4-4. The Australian made the breakthrough in the ninth game as he broke his opponent to take
a 5-4 lead and held his serve in the next game to win the set 6-4.
The 18-year-old gave a very good first serve performance, hitting three aces and capturing nineteen of the 23 points on the first serves in the second set.
Carrying the winning momentum into the third set, Tomic took an early lead as he broke the American in the first game and consolidated on it to build a 2-0 lead. The six feet and four inches tall maintained his lead till the end
of the set and claimed it 6-4.
A Jubilant Tomic said, talking to the reporters after the match, "I was pretty confident. I'm happy the way I played today and got through. I have a tough player next match. We had a tough match in Australia a few years ago, and
I think it's going to be a big battle when we play on Wednesday/Thursday. So I have to prepare as much as I can this time to beat him this time and have revenge on him."
The Australian is slated to take on 27th seed Marin Cilic of Croatia in the round of 64.
