Bernard Tomic upset by David Goffin in the opening round – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Australia’s best player on the ATP World Tour, Bernard Tomic, gave a disappointing performance, as he got stunned by Belgium’s 70th ranked player, David Goffin, in the his very first match at the Wimbledon Championships
on Tuesday.
Tomic squandered a lead of one set, losing three in a row to go down 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 4-6 after a battle of two hours and 33 minutes.
The start of the match was exactly according to the expectations, as Tomic grabbed opening three games to race to a 3-0 lead. Goffin struck in the fifth to reduce the trail to 2-3 but the Australian did not allow him to come on
equal terms, hitting another blow in the very next game and moving ahead 4-2. Tomic allowed the Belgian to claim only one more in the rest of the set, sealing it 6-3.
Goffin grabbed first two games of the second set but Tomic bounced back immediately to equalise the score at 2-2. The Belgian struck again in the sixth and made the most of it this time to capture it 6-3.
Carrying the winning momentum into the third set, Goffin grabbed a breakthrough in the very first game and held his next serve to grab a 2-0 lead. The Belgian sustained it till the end, closing it 6-4.
Goffin and Tomic started the fourth set by holding their serve in the opening two games to take the score to 1-1. The Belgian managed to snatch a break in the third and consolidated on it to attain a 3-1 advantage. The 21-year-old
did not allow Tomic to stage a comeback and won 6-4.
A jubilant Goffin said, after the match, "It was a good performance. It wasn't good start, but I was feeling good. I lost the first set, but I was feeling good and then continued to keep focus in my game. Game after game it was
better, and then I played a really, really good game. I served very well during all the match, and I was more aggressive after the first set."
Tomic looked frustrated during the match, smashing his racket on the ground. The Australian accepted, "I'm not normally like that but it's a good I guess sign of relief when you smash a racquet. It's not no one's fault but I've
got to get back on that track where I was playing the start of the year."
Goffin is slated to meet American contestant, Jesse Levine, in the next match.
