Bernard Tomic will kick off 2012 campaign from Brisbane – Tennis News
Rated at number 37 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Bernard Tomic of Australia has announced that he will start the coming tennis year from Queensland to play the Brisbane International.
This year’s Wimbledon quarter-finalist, 19-year-old Tomic took a short lay-off from professional tennis at home on the Gold Coast, after his amazing run at the Wimbledon Championships. He told that he will take off his Australian summer campaign from the very first tournament of the next ATP season in Brisbane.
“January’s coming and that’s Australian Open and Brisbane International time,” Tomic said. “You want to get here [Brisbane] before and prepare. I haven’t won a round yet in Brisbane, in the last three years, and if I can push and play well early in Brisbane… get some confidence before I lead into the Australian Open, I think it will be a really big benefit [for] me for the 2012 Australian Open. Brisbane is a great tournament for me, I love playing there. It’s my favourite place to play. Hopefully I can do well here, in Australia and in the future.”
Cameron Pearson, the tournament director for Brisbane International, showed his eagerness to welcome the Australian teenager in the event next year. He stated that it is a real coup that one of the Australia’s fastest rising tennis stars has shown his commitment for play in Brisbane international.
Tomic’s run at the Wimbledon Championships was nothing short of sensational. The 19-year-old from the Gold Coast stunned a number of top class players in the Grand Slam event to make his name among the uprising tennis stars. He overcame the former world number three, Nikolay Davydenko, fifth ranked Swede, Robin Soderling and Xavier Malisse of Belgium to reach the quarter-final of the mega event. He was finally blown away by the belligerence of the eventual champion, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, in the round of eight. Tomic’s ranking immediately swelled from number 158 to world number 71 after his brilliant performance at the Wimbledon Championships.
The Aussie outplayed this year’s Brisbane International champion, Soderling, in his Grand Slam campaign at the Flushing Meadows and his inclusion in the field for the next year has made him one of the favorites for the event. Tomic suffered an opening round exit at the Queensland, where he was outdone by Germany’s Florian Mayer, in straight sets, 2-6, 2-6. A lot more is expected from the Australian this time round and it is anticipated that the youngster will deliver it in front of his home crowd.
