Bernard Tomic’s attitude pleases Patrick Rafter at last – Tennis News
Aussie tennis prodigy, Bernard Tomic, has been under the cosh from the Australian Davis Cup captain, Patrick Rafter, after his US Open loss to Andy Roddick. Rafter rated his performance as ‘disgraceful’ during the Grand Slam campaign but a positive change in the attitude of the youngster has finally pleased the Aussie legend.
"I think everyone has been really impressed with how Bernie has been going," said Rafter in a press conference. “He has really put his hand up and done everything that has been asked of him on the court and is hitting the ball really well."
Tomic has been involved in a number of controversies during the last one year, causing a huge damage to his image as a professional tennis player. His fade-out against Roddick in the US Open opened up a new confrontation between him and Rafter but things have seemed to get cooled down now. Tomic is leading the Australian Davis Cup squad against Team Germany in the tie on the German dirt this weekend.
The Aussie youngster avoided the reporters’ question regarding his latest tussle with his team captain and kept focused on the upcoming crunch game against the Germans.
"I appreciate the question," said Tomic in response to the reports’ questions. “That was in the past. I am here for Davis Cup and I want to help my team out as much as I can to get these boys over the line and if I can answer those questions after, I will."
Australian squad will take on the home favourites at the clay courts of Rothenbaum Stadium, in Hamburg, Germany, on 14th of September. The world number 42, Tomic, will serve as the spearhead against the strong German squad, along with Matthew Ebden, Chris Guccione and the former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt.
The German side is headed by the world number 25, Florian Mayer, along with Benjamin Becker, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe and the doubles specialist, Philipp Petzschner.
Rafter threatened last week not to include Tomic for the Davis Cup campaign but couldn’t take such drastic measure to leaving out the Aussie number one from the big match. It is extremely pleasing to see everything getting settled within the Australian team and Tomic getting in tune with Rafter.
