Bernardo Miranda and Hizonume Bettero qualify for Round 3: Second round of Super Surf International – Part 2
Welcome back to Santa Catarina, the location for the fifth ASP Prime event of the year, Super Surf International.
The third heat of round of 48 pitted Brazil’s Bernardo Miranda against Spain’s Aritz Aranburu and the two Australians, Benn Dunn and Julian Wilson.
Competing in his own backyard against a foreign competition, Miranda was clearly at an advantage. Not only did he possess the local knowledge of the waves, he also enjoyed the support of the local crowd. With the scales tipping in his favour, he entered
the heat to contest for victory and a place in the third round of the competition. Without wasting much time, he locked a wave to score an impressive 7.17 points off it and soon followed it up with a 4.17-point second wave to finish the heat with a total score
of 11.54.
Dunn responded to the challenge strongly, scoring 4.83 from his first wave and 6.60 points from his second. However, he missed out on victory by a 0.11-point deficit and had to settle for runner-up position. The result qualified him for the round of 24 though,
allowing him to stay alive in the competition for now.
Wilson and Aranburu rounded out the third and fourth position with 10.83 and 9.04 points respectively. Both the surfers no longer remain in contention for the event title.
Brazil’s Hizonume Bettero faced off against his compatriot Joao Abreu as well as Australia’s Tom Whitaker and South Africa’s Travis Logie.
Regardless of the difficult surfing conditions, Bettero managed to clinch a convincing victory over his rivals and advanced to the round of 24. During the heat, he locked a wave in the final moments to score 7.00 and immediately followed with a 7.50-point
wave to finish with a heat-total of 14.50 points.
Whitaker landed himself in second place after posting 3.40 and 5.37 off his two waves respectively. His effort, while not that impressive, was enough to guarantee a place for him in the next round.
Abreu disappointed the local crowd by failing to make a strong impact in the heat and took third position only. He ended the heat with a two-wave total of 8.50 points. Logie found himself in last position with 7.77 points. Both the surfers found themselves
out of the competition due to their inadequate scores.
