Bernd Wiesberger on top of leaderboard after second round of Ballantine’s Championship: Wrap up Part-1
Austrian Bernd Wiesberger has now clinched the halfway lead after the culmination of second round at the Ballantine’s Championship and is finally eyeing a ray of hope on his second season on the tour.
The 26-year-old Austrian came close to lifting his maiden European Tour title last year and is hoping to land his first European Tour title here at the scenic Blackstone Golf Club in Seoul.
Wiesberger pulled in a humble even-par, 72 on the opening day of the event where most of the high-profile players fell for the windy conditions and play was suspended in the later part of the day.
He shot a second round of seven-under, 65 to surge past the nearest contender, Australian Marcus Fraser by one shot.
He said, “Last year I've always kind of hung in there. So I feel comfortable up there. It's different for you if you go in the last day as the leader, but we'll see how it goes. We'll see how tomorrow goes, and I'll just take it easy and hope that I have a nice day tomorrow”.
Starting from back nine early in the morning, Wiesberger remained even-par on the starting three holes and carded two birdies in the middle of the back nine.
He pulled in another on the 18th before making the turn, sharing the lead.
He carded four more birdies on the front nine and did not drop a single shot throughout the 18-hole stretch.
Two-time winner on the Challenge Tour, Wiesberger earned his tour card for the mainstream European Tour in the year 2009 through the Qualifying School in December.
Unable to win a title, Wiesberger lost his card in 2010 and had to go back to Challenge Tour for the next season.
He won twice in 2010 at the Allianz Golf Open de Lyon and at the Allianz Golf Open du Grand Toulouse, finishing for a strong fifth on the rankings which automatically qualified him for the European Tour.
He shot into contention in the final round of the Gleneagles and lost five-man play-off to the rampaging Thomas Bjorn.
The lanky Austrian has worked hard to pull in a victory this season, before losing his European Tour card yet again.
