Bernd Wiesberger set to defend Lyoness Open title – Golf News
Bernd Wiesberger is set to defend the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity title, when he tees off this week at the Diamond Country Club, on Thursday, June 6, 2013.
Last year, the Austrian star fired a 19-under par tournament score to record an emphatic three-stroke victory over Thomas Levet and Shane Lowry.
This year, he is confident to repeat the heroics that allowed him to bag the second European Tour title of his career.
Recently, he participated in the Nordea Masters and weekend rounds of 64 and 66 allowed him to finish third in the tournament.
“It was an unbelievable weekend and great to play the way I did just before heading home to Austria,” said Wiesberger. “I am very pleased with my finish and to finish off in the top three against such a good field is a huge boost
ahead of defending my title.”
Wiesberger enjoyed a great form last season, winning two events, the Ballantine’s Championship and the Lyoness Open. According to him, Lyoness Open victory was really special to him, as it came in front of his home crowd. Also,
he overcame a four-stroke deficit in the final round to claim a huge victory in the end, which makes him feel proud of his performance last year.
“It was a dream come true last year - to win in Korea and then come home to my national open with all the crowd there,” he said. “I feel very comfortable at Atzenbrugg, there are so many friendly faces and that is something you
can feed off.”
Wiesberger holds a strong track record at the Diamond Country Club, as he finished tied fifth in the 2011 edition of the event, before storming to victory last year.
Also, the expectations from the 27-year-old star are also high, because of his recent taking over of the Austrian number one position, previously held by the Markus Brier, who became the first home winner of the event in 2006.
Miguel Angel Jiménez and Thomas Björn are other two players who are enjoying a great form – both players finished tied fourth last week – and will tee off this week at the Lyoness Open.
