Bernd Wiesberger wins the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters
Bernd Wiesberger fired a five-under par 67, in the final round of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters, to record a one-stroke victory over reigning British Open champion Ernie Els, on Sunday, May 5, 2013.
The tournament was being staged at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club, featuring some of the best players from different parts of the world.
The Asian Tour event is known for attracting big names each year. This year too, the tournament featured top-notch players, including the likes of Former Asian number one Thongchai Jaidee, last year’s Asian number one Thaworn Wiratchant and Philippine’s
Angelo Que.
Throughout the week, Wiesberger displayed consistency in his game, and remained in contention for the top spot on the leaderboard.
Entering the final round, he was sharing the second spot with Els. He then opened his final round campaign with a birdie on the very first hole that he played.
The fourth hole witnessed him conceding his only bogey of the day. He then birdied the eighth and the ninth hole, to reach the turn in two under.
The back nine of the course witnessed him recording one eagle and a birdie on the 16th hole, which allowed him to take his second Asian Tour title home.
Talking to the reporters after recording his victory, he expressed his pleasure in winning another tournament on the Asian soil.
According to him, he struggled on the front nine of the course. However, the last two birdies on the front nine boosted his morale, which in turn, allowed him to play good shots on the back nine of the course.
“I was struggling in the beginning after my birdie on one. But at the turn I got a bit of momentum going because I was confident with my ball striking,” said Wiesberger, who finished seventh last year.
“It was good to hole the eagle and it was nice that Ernie (also eagled the same hole) stayed in touch. He wouldn’t let go and that’s why he is such a great champion. It was a good time to do that and it got my round going,” he added.
