Bernhard Langer falters, but happy with the second place at the The Senior Open Championship
Bernhard Langer, the opening round leader at The Senior Open Championship, faltered on day two and recorded a three-over par 73 at Ailsa links at Turnberry.
He got off to another good start on Friday, as he recorded back-to-back birdies on the first two holes that he played. However, his score equalled the par after he suffered bogeys on the fifth and seventh hole.
He tried to make a comeback with a birdie on the 11 hole. However, a double bogey on the 13th hole spoiled his scorecard and dragged him down to the share of the second place.
“I started with two birdies and made some wonderful putts and played okay for the most part and then I hit a couple of bad shots coming home, and paid the price,” the former world number one said. “If you take the average score, it's five to seven over par”.
Despite surrendering the lead to Gary Hallberg, who carded a sizzling seven-under par 63, he did not seem disappointed with his overall performance.
He still finds himself in contention while heading towards the weekend. Therefore, a single bad round did not bother him and he plans to return to the top in the remaining two rounds.
Yet, he admitted that he did not play well after getting a great start in the afternoon. However, he also blamed the tough weather conditions that forced him to take some risks during the day.
“I had a great start but then it wasn't so great,” admitted Langer. “The conditions were extremely tough.  I had a lost ball and I had an unplayable ball and I had lots of stuff happening on the back side.  It wasn't maybe my best but in the end I have to
take it and move on”.
When Hallberg registered a record-tying 63 early in the morning, the conditions were quite favourable for the players.
However, when Langer entered the course, the crosswinds and strong winds were creating huge difficulties for the players to make their strokes.
That is why Langer embraced the second-place finish halfway through the second round very happily.
