Bernhard Langer lurking at the European Senior Tour’s Pon Senior Open
Bernhard Langer had to play the opening round of the Pon Senior Open during the toughest part of the day. Yet, he did not appear to be struggling at any moment and posted an amazing four-under par 68, at the Winston Golf Resort.
After Ross Drummond and Terry Price set the clubhouse lead at a five-under par 67, Langer had a great deal of work to do, especially when the course started to create problems for the players.
The rain showers dampened the layout and the strong winds added to the difficulty of the course.
However, Langer did not care much about that and got off to a confident start. He birdied two of the first three holes that he played, before dropping a shot on the fourth hole.
Later during the day, he added another three birdies on the 9th, 13th and 14th hole and settled only one stroke behind the leaders.
“It was a solid round and a good score because the conditions were tough out there in the wind and the rain,” said Langer.
“I started really well and was two under through three but then had a terrible shot on the fourth and made a few bad swings after that,” he continued. “Thankfully I got it back and made a couple of good birdies on the back nine to finish with a good score”.
“The score could have probably been a few strokes better because I created a few really good other chances on the back nine but just couldn’t hole the putts,” he added.
Overall, he was pleased with his performance, especially when he was only one-stroke margin adrift of the leaders.
He stated that another good round can put him in the commanding position, entering the final round on Sunday.
So far in the 2012 European Seniors Tour, the former Masters champion has played a total of four tournaments. Among all, he has not finished worst than standing tied for the sixth position that came at The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex.
At the US Senior Open, he led the field after three rounds. However, he failed to retain the top spot, after posting a 72 in the final round and slipped down to the second position.
