Bernie Ecclestone, Formula One President, says cancellation of Bahrain events best possible decision
Formula One boss, Bernie Ecclestone, has said in a recent interview that the decision to cancel the Bahrain races was the only reasonable choice. “I'm a little bit disappointed that it has now been postponed, but if you look at the way that part of the world
is at the moment, it is the only thing anyone could do,” said Ecclestone.
Ecclestone mentioned that the decision fell on Bahrain’s Prince Salman but he and the prince discussed the issue deeply and came up with the best option. He further said that the decision of the Prince was based on security reasons. Safety concerns were
heightened as human rights activist stated that they would target Formula One events to promote their cause.
Ecclestone said, “The crown prince thought it was the correct thing to do, and that would be on safety obviously.” He further said that the race is only postponed and not cancelled as Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) would like to continue
in more suitable circumstances. The only possibility, in the congested race timetable, is between Abu Dhabi and the Brazilian Grand Prix, which will push the Brazilian Grand Prix in to the first week of December.
If this scenario unfolds, it will be only the second time in history that a Formula One season has extended into December. The first time this happened was in 1963. Talking about the reschedule, Ecclestone said, “We don't know. We're looking to see how we
can slot it in.”
Prince Salman said on Monday that his attentions were focused on resolving the countries disputes and that he would love to have a Grand Prix in more favorable conditions where all can participate freely.
The Bahrain Grand Prix attracts many drivers from around the world who are looking to test their cars limits. Jamie Alguersuari said in his interview that the hot conditions of Bahrain would have given his team more insight about the Pirelli rubber. Also
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa said that, “I like Bahrain, so if we go back there I will be happy.”
The final test which was scheduled in Bahrain is being rescheduled for Barcelona from 8th to 11th March. It will be interesting to see how the Crown Prince resolves internal disputes in time for Formula One to return to his country.
