Bernie Ecclestone: I will cheer if Michael Schumacher beats Sebastian Vettel in Red Bull – Formula 1
Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has expressed his feelings about the seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.
The 80-year-old said that he would be happy to see Schumacher in the Red Bull team and beating the defending champion, Sebastian Vettel.
Bernie stated, “I would like to see him in a Red Bull because you don't know how good the Mercedes is. Compared to his team-mate Rosberg, it (Schumacher's performance) doesn't look good. But Michael is a fighter and he can still win. I'll be the first to
cheer when he beats Vettel.”
Bernie added that he has been disappointed by Schumi’s return to the Formula 1 arena after he left on such a high note.
The German ended his career in a third place finish in the drivers’ championship in the 2006 season. The 42-year-old German returned to the Formula 1 arena in the 2010 season with a debutant team, Mercedes.
Schumacher’s contract with the Mercedes team is until 2012 but his first season with the team was not much impressive which forced everyone to say that he should quit.
The seven-time world champion ended the 2010 season in 9th place with 72 points. He was a shameful 70 points behind his much younger teammate, Nico Rosberg.
Mercedes team president, Norbert Haug still thinks that there is still some spark left in the record holding champion.
“I would not underestimate him or his ability. So far this year his true capabilities have been clear not in results, but in lap times, yes,” admitted Haug.
Mercedes boss Ross Brawn also thinks that Schumacher will return strong in the upcoming races of the 2011 season.
In the 2011 season so far, Schumacher has been outperformed by his teammate Rosberg. However, as the ongoing season is only four races old, no concrete conclusions can be made yet.
The fifth race of the season is scheduled for May 22, 2011 in Spain and the German will look to bring his best on the track and make his return to Formula 1 worthy.
