Bernie Ecclestone: Teams will be happy to race in Bahrain is safety guaranteed – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has voiced in favour of the Bahrain Grand Prix and said that the teams will be happy to race there if security is guaranteed.
Ecclestone added that the crown prince of Bahrain was seriously looking into the matter but assured the Formula 1 teams that the deadline will not be extended beyond June 3, 2011.
From originally being a season opener of the 2011 season, Bahrain is now in a struggle to at least get a place on the 2011 calendar. Bernie has said this on quite a few occasions that Bahrain will be reinstated in the ongoing season.
However, Formula 1 teams are now pressurising Bernie to decide as soon as possible so that teams can prepare for another race.
Bernie stated that no extension in the deadline will be given to Bahrain and the decision is expected next month.
“It could be safe on the Friday of the race, and then on the Sunday there could be...I don't know. The Crown Prince hopes everything will be fine. You know he is supportive. I don't think we will have any problem,” stated Ecclestone.
The 80-year-old Formula 1 head added that only if the protesters try to use the race to gather attention, it will be a problem otherwise it is safe to go there late in the 2011 season.
Ecclestone said, “I hope F1 will be racing there, the teams are happy, the problem is the date. The trouble for the teams is that it is difficult with all their people, so they're going to speak to them and find out what the general feeling is.”
He added that the teams are anxious to get a date for the Bahrain GP and some good news is expected in June.
If Bahrain is reinstated in the 2011 season, the Indian Grand Prix will be pushed in early December.
For now, the 2011 Formula 1 season continues with the Monaco Grand Prix scheduled for May 29.
