Bernie Ecclestone calls for the European races to work hard – Formula 1 news
F1 boss, Bernie Ecclestone, has stated that the European races must work harder in order to maintain their slots in the F1 calendar.
Ecclestone said that the aim is to add new races each season and they are planning to go to Russia soon.
“Yes. I suppose the next big thing will be Russia,” Ecclestone told the official Formula 1 website. “Then we have to get this New York thing picking up again. There's lots of unfinished business - no time to waste one thought on retirement! Look at the Austin
race: it was phenomenal. Everybody agreed that it is great that Formula One is back in the States. Maybe we'll get the Europeans to wake up instead of thinking that it (a race) is a God-given thing. When Europeans perform and do their job we are happy to stay.”
Ecclestone added that one of the main targets for the FIA is to keep F1 racing exciting and popular everywhere it goes. He said that there is nothing he wants to change about the sport currently. He pointed out that F1 definitely falls into entertainment
category; it will be worrisome if it fails to do that and people start to forget about it.
FIA has recently rescheduled the 2013 F1 calendar in order to empty a slot for a certain European race. However, the identity of the event has not been confirmed yet. Many options are being considered that include the Austrian GP and the Turkish GP.
The latest trend in F1 has been of adding races from Asia and Middle East. One of the main highlights of this past season was the return of the United States GP in Austin. A new racing track, known as the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), was built for the
specific purpose of this race. The United States GP has remained inconsistent in the F1 calendar and has not been received with much enthusiasm in America. The race returned after five years to the 2012 F1 season and with hype of the new circuit, the event
turned out to be much more successful.
Ecclestone has also been hinting towards London GP.
