Bernie Ecclestone continues to negotiate over Nurburgring issue – Formula 1 news
Bernie Ecclestone, the chief executive officer of Formula 1 is presently negotiating with the co-ordinators of the Nurburgring circuit so as to ensure 2013 German Grand Prix.
The track which hosts the German GP is under heavy debt and the officials are insisting that there are chances that they may not be able to host the race in the next season. However, the Rhineland-Palatinate state government which has 90% ownership of the
holding company of the circuit has agreed to give 254 million Euros to Nurburgring.
Although, it appeared to provide a massive boost to keep the race event on the calendar, conversely, the European Commission has started an investigation of the state’s support.
"The European Commission has extended the scope of an in-depth investigation opened in March 2012 under EU state aid rules regarding a set of aid measures supporting the racetrack and leisure park at Nurburgring in Germany," a European Commission press release
said. "The extension concerns several additional financial measures aimed at avoiding an immediate insolvency of the companies concerned."
Moreover, the officials are insisting that the F1 race is not necessary for the future existence of the circuit as they believe that they can get other events there. Contrarily, Ecclestone is very eager to keep Germany in the future which has hosted the
race since 1951. In addition, he said that he is looking forward to see the alternate venues too.
Meanwhile, the 81-year-old has said that he is having a conversation with the event managers of the race in Hockenheimring so as to keep it on the next season’s calendar.
"I am currently in negotiations with the officials at the Nurburgring," the Briton said. "We need to keep the German race, so we'll do the best we can to sort this out. The aim is to have race at the Nurburgring in 2013."
It will be notable that the sport has suffered a lot due to the ongoing economic crisis. Over and above, it will be interesting to see whether the endeavours of Ecclestone prove out to be successful in securing the future of F1 in Germany or not.
