Bernie Ecclestone denies excluding of Spa from the F1 calendar
The Formula One supremo, Bernie Ecclestone has very clearly dismissed all the reports regarding the omission of the popular Spa-Francorchamps Circuit from the Formula One calendar in the years to come.
Spa is one of the most popular and most celebrated venues of the sport calendar, and has never failed to thrill and excite the race lovers. It lies in Belgium and has been hosting the Belgian Grand Prix for a very long time now.
It was reported earlier this season that Ecclestone has confirmed that the Belgian track could be omitted from the calendar in the years to come. He could have said this because a number of new circuits are being added to the calendar. The race schedule
that saw sixteen races only a couple of years back, held 19 races this season while 20 races are expected to be witnessed in 2011. However, all the teams as well as the drivers are adamant that they would not let the calendar be exceeded from 20 races.
When the supremo was asked earlier this year that how would he adjust the influx of so many new circuits, he replied that some of the old venues would be excluded mentioning Spa-Francorchamps as one of those.
However, the 79-year-old talked to the Belgian television RTBF today, telling that he was "misinterpreted" by the media and has never meant to say that Spa could be ever excluded from the calendar.
While talking to the host during the television show Ecclestone confirmed, "The media twisted my words, I am sure that in the years to come, we will lose a few races in Europe. It is almost certain. Which ones, I have no idea. But from our side, we want
to keep Spa. There are long discussions about the grand prix there, but if it does go, it will be because of the government, not me."
The 2008 season saw the entry of Singapore track and last year welcomed the Abu Dhabi circuit in the calendar. This year the Korean International Circuit held the debut Formula One race on its soil while India is also getting prepared to hail the Formula
One squad for the first time in 2011. Moreover, the Russian government has also signed a deal with FIA earlier this month to embrace a round in 2014. Moreover, USA has started working on their new Austin circuit to re-enter the calendar very soon.
