Bernie Ecclestone eager to create artificial rain during Formula 1 races – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 Management chief Bernie Ecclestone has recently stated that he would like to see the trackside sprinklers at the circuits create rain artificially in order to create the environment of a wet circuit in the middle of Formula 1 races.
Bernie believes that this would obviously make Formula 1 more exhilarating and it would increase overtaking as well.
“Overtaking is almost impossible because in the dry there is only one line good for maximum speed because of the rubber on the track. You have a completely different picture when it is wet. We always had the most exciting races in the wet so let's think
of making rain,” he said.
He added that some of the tracks have the equipment to make the track wet artificially and it would be easier for the International Automobile Federation (FIA) if the same system is created at a number of tracks. However, this rain would not be beneficial
for all of the teams and as a result, races would become more predictable as well. Other than that, the teams would rely on their ‘luck’ rather than their skills and car.
Nevertheless, the reintroduction of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System and movable rear wings is expected to improve overtaking.
KERS is a device that converts Heat energy created by the car into Kinetic Energy and stores it for later use. After a certain amount of energy has been saved, the drivers can then use that energy later on in order to provide their respective cars with a
sort of boost.
If Bernie really does introduce this system in Formula 1, one has to admit that it would create a lot of disputes between teams and also make racing more dangerous as well. But Bernie thinks the movable rear wings are more dangerous.
“To me this system looks pretty dangerous. What if the wings are not up again before the corner and the driver is lacking downforce? That could easily lead to incidents. We have to observe it carefully,” said Bernie.
If the FIA can come up with a reliable and unbiased system which can create rain artificially, it would definitely spice things up a bit and make Formula 1 more entertaining and dramatic.
