Bernie Ecclestone fears mute F1 tracks
The Formula One supremo, Bernie Ecclestone is the next man in the long list of the officials who have showed much concern for the new Formula One engines that are to hit the tracks in 2013.
As per instructions from FIA, a new 1.6 litre, four-cylinder engine is going to be introduced after the next two years. Many of the high-profile figures in the sport have expressed their concern over the announcement as these engines will not produce the
kind of sound Formula One cars have always been famous for. The current roaring engines of the swiftest cars around the globe make a sharp sound on the tracks, which has become a great exhilarating factor for the race lovers. However, the introduction of environmental
friendly engines will put a mute to the revving sound of engines and it is speculated that the fans will not be much happy about it.
In the past few years FIA has come up with several changes in the sport, mostly which are directly related to the cost optimization and environment protection. This change now in the engines is also considered to be a part of the same chain. However, many
officials like the Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo believe that the economical, smaller capacity turbocharged engines will make the current, very expensive V8s useless. Montezemolo proclaimed a few days back that the 1.6 litre, four-cylinder power engines
"sounds a bit pathetic" for the world’s highest ranking auto racing series. The three times world champion, Niki Lauda also echoed the same belief saying, "I am worried about the sound, which in formula one has been so unique ... Hopefully there will be more
than a faint hum."
Finally, Ecclestone also accepted that he too is much concerned about this change as he said, "I don't care whether it's 1.6 or 1.8 litre engines - I'm worried about the sound. If we lose the sound of Formula One, we will be losing a great deal."
However, the FIA president Jean Todt dismissed all these apprehensions explaining that it is very important for the sport to keep moving on. He stated, "I can guarantee that the formula one cars for the 2013 season will be very exciting and produce a great
sound. The development of the industry in the past years has been bringing safety and environmental awareness to the foreground, and the car manufacturers have made great progress in both areas.”
