Bernie Ecclestone proposes changes to the 2012 Formula 1 calendar – Formula 1 news
The chief of Formula 1 Management Bernie Ecclestone has recently proposed some changes to the 2012 Formula 1 calendar which include the removal of the Turkish Grand Prix and some major changes to the dates of the races.
According to the new calendar proposed by Bernie, the Australian Grand Prix is expected to be the season opening race and is going to take place on March 18, 2011 followed by the Malaysian Grand Prix a week later.
The 2012 Formula 1 calendar now includes 20 races instead of 21 since the Turkish Grand Prix has been removed. According to the dates proposed by Ecclestone, the season will come to an end on November 25, 2011 which seems fine as the teams did not want to
take part in any race in December.
Other than that, people including Ross Brawn, the team principal of Mercedes GP stated that the teams will not allow the officials to increase the number of races any more as 20 races are more than enough.
With the addition of the Indian Grand Prix in 2011 and the addition of the US Grand Prix in 2012, the Formula 1 calendar is becoming even more versatile. It is believed that the Russian Grand Prix will also become a part of the sport in 2013 after which
one of the venues might lose its spot in the Formula 1 calendar.
Nevertheless, Bernie has also moved the Indian Grand Prix as the 4th race of the 2012 Formula 1 season while the US Grand Prix has been moved to the end of the calendar as it is expected to take place on November 18, 2011 as the second last race
of the season.
Besides that, the European phase of the calendar has not been changed much as it is going to begin from May 13, 2011 in Spain and end on September 9 in Italy.
The new circuits are going to be quite interesting for the drivers as they will offer a new feel which might affect the sport as a whole in a positive way.
