Bernie Ecclestone reviews 2010 Formula One season
The Formula One supremo, Bernie Ecclestone is happy with the way the 2010 season unwrapped and is even happier to see the Red Bull driver, Sebastian Vettel having won the drivers’ championship.
Ecclestone proclaimed that Vettel’s potential was always striking on the track. The 80-year-old always believed that the German was destined to be a Formula One world champion, only he was not sure that the young driver could make it that soon.
While talking about the other Red Bull driver, Mark Webber the Supremo said that he has always been a great driver only that he has embraced some poor seasons in the past. Ecclestone is of the view that the driver could have bagged the championship years
ago, had he been given the right car. For the Formula One boss, Webber perfectly suits the mould of a Ferrari driver, as his driving style and character fits well with that of the Italian team.
While commenting on how the season unfolded for the drivers of Red Bull Racing, the 80-year- old said, "Vettel was always going to be World Champion one day, wasn't he, if not this year then next? He's very good. Had Webber been in a good car five years
ago, maybe he would have been World Champion five years ago. I think he's a Ferrari driver as he's got the sort of character the Old Man (Enzo Ferrari) would have liked."
Despite of being an old friend of Michael Schumacher of Mercedes GP, Ecclestone believes that the first surprise was to see the driver return to the sport this year after a gap of three years. While the second and more intense one was to see the way he
drove all through the season. On the other hand, he praised his teammate, Nico Rosberg saying that the young German is one of the best drivers seen on the 2010 grid.
The British man explained saying, "You'd have to look at it and ask did Michael Schumacher need to come back? What was the purpose? He wanted to come back because he knows he can win, but unfortunately the car didn't allow that to happen. I'd love to see
him winning. Put him in one of the Red Bulls and then see what happens. But then we don't know how good Rosberg is. Maybe Rosberg in a Red Bull would beat all of them ..."
Although all that came to the forefront this season apparently excites the ‘old man’, yet he is not happy for the three teams that entered into the sport this season namely, Lotus, Virgin and HRT. None of the three rookie teams had been able to bag any points,
and that makes the Formula One supremo much annoyed. Earlier this year, he very vividly pronounced that these teams were only increasing traffic on the grid and they should reconsider their inclusion in Formula One.
While reviewing the 2010 season, the CEO believes that it was a wrong policy made by Max Mosley, the former FIA president, who allowed such teams to enter the sport. Mosley introduced the offer of 30 million [pounds sterling] to one of the rookie teams who
would meet the set targets. Ecclestone pointed his finger saying that these teams lack pace required for the most prestigious auto racing series.
Still, the Formula One president believes that this season will be remembered for a very long time as the most nerve-tickling and nail-biting one in the sport’s history. The on and off track drama and thrill was far from over until the very last moment of
the season decider, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
With his novel and innovative ideas, Ecclestone hopes to make every season equally exhilarating as he spreads the Formula One arenas all across the globe.
