Bernie Ecclestone says Cape Town can get a Formula 1 venue in two years – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 Management chief Bernie Ecclestone has said that a South African Grand Prix can take place in two years time as the country can arrange a venue in Cape Town until then.
This will definitely be a very good change for the sport as the last African Grand Prix took place back in 1993. Since a Russian Grand Prix might take place in the near future as well, seeing races in that part of the world is going to be quite interesting.
Designing more circuits in Europe would make the sport quite boring as Greece and a couple of other places in Europe want a race in their respective regions.
According to Bernie, the negotiations regarding an African Grand Prix are currently in their final stages and the fans can expect an official announcement regarding this matter in the next couple of weeks.
“I'm hoping we can make a decision as soon as our lawyers have a good look at them... within the next couple of weeks. It'll be good to be back in South Africa. We were very happy when it was here in the past,” he said.
In 2012, it is expected that the US Grand Prix will be reintroduced to the sport once again as well but this time, the race is going to take place in Austin, Texas instead of the usual Indianapolis.
Nevertheless, the officials of the sport should not disturb some of the legendary venues of the sport in the Formula 1 calendar in order to accommodate these new venues.
Since the 2012 Formula 1 calendar is expected to hold 21 races, the teams are already against the idea as they will now hardly get a break in the winters. The season will end somewhere around November with not many breaks in between races either.
According to Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn, there should only be 20 races in a single Formula 1 season and most of the teams agree to this idea which makes it very difficult for the organisers to increase the number of races per season.
