Bernie Ecclestone talks about downsizing the Formula 1 teams – Formula 1 Update
Formula 1 chief, Bernie Ecclestone, has recently revealed that according to him the Formula 1 has one team too many and before the 2013 season, he would like to see only ten teams on the grid. He further said that Formula 1 is the peak of all motor sports
and there is no need for ‘spare parts’, as he was referring to Virgin and Hispania Racing Team.
Ecclestone previously said that Formula 1 is expanding rapidly and now covers almost the entire globe, while the teams are divided into two groups as the ones that are winning and ones that are just very slow to impress. He said that the three teams that
debuted last season, Virgin, HRT and Lotus, are very slow and did not score any points in that season.
Lotus is looking somewhat secured for the coming season, as they have shown some competitiveness in the pre-season test sessions after they moved from Cosworth to the Renault engine. Ecclestone said about the Lotus team that, “I'm very happy that they are
back. They will get on their feet and then sponsors will be attracted to them and we'll see them grow.”
On the other hand, Ecclestone was not very impressed by the other two teams, Virgin and HRT. He said, “One or two of them (the new teams) shouldn't be there perhaps ... it's a bit rich for their blood.” He explained that the Formula 1 is becoming the biggest
motor sport event and only the competitive teams should be allowed to participate. Virgin are already looking determined to do some real racing this season, as they were the slowest car on the grid last year.
On the other hand, HRT is looking to be the prime candidate to be dropped from the sport on the basis of performance. Twice in a row, HRT are going into the championship season without testing out their car. They had a miserable last season where they were
unable to finish most races due to an un-reliable car. The team is currently struggling for sponsors.
The HRT drivers, Narain Karthikeyan and Vitantonio Liuzzi, have promised a great season, but only time will tell about their possible future in Formula 1.
