Bernie Ecclestone thinks Michael Schumacher is a title contender this year – Formula 1 update
Talking to the media on Tuesday, the Formula one Boss, Bernie Ecclestone, said that Michael Schumacher will be able to steal races against some of the big Formula one names including Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton if, ‘he has a competitive
car’.
Talking about the comeback season Michael Schumacher had, Ecclestone said that Schumacher made his come back to a Mercedes team who were not a champion team.
Ecclestone also spoke of the only two drivers in the history of Formula One, who came back and were able to win titles; Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. He mentioned that the circumstances were different in those times. He explained that there is no comparison
between these three drivers as Lauda had two titles and Prost had three, while Michael has seven world championships to his name. He further strengthen his argument by saying that both of the drivers, Lauda and Prost, made their way back in winning teams. Lauda
returned in McLaren and Prost in Williams. Ecclestone also said that during Lauda and Prost’s racing days, there used to be only two maybe three title contenders teams. And now there are almost five teams, which means the competition is tough and 10 drivers
are eyeing the title.
When asked about who might be a championship contender, apart from Schumacher he said, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. He was also questioned about the fastest car in the testing sessions and he replied, “Looks like Red
Bull again has the best car and the others have to close a gap before the first race.”
Talking about Robert Kubica he said, “For me Robert Kubica is one of the top drivers.” He was asked about his thoughts on Kubica competing in a Rally in such crucial times and getting into an accident, to which he said, “if you could choose your kind of
accident I am sure they [Formula one drivers] would all choose a Formula One car.”He went on to mention the 2007 accident, where Kubica came out with minor injuries.
Ecclestone said that the management should have spoken to Kubica and asked him to choose between Rallying and the Formula One pre-test session. He said Kubica should have never gone for Rally races this close to the start of the season.
