Bernie Ecclestone thinks Michael Schumacher shouldn’t have comeback – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 CEO, Bernie Ecclestone has said that Michael Schumacher has made a mistake to comeback in the sport after his retirement.
Schumacher took retirement from F1 back in 2006 and came back in 2010 with Mercedes. The veteran German driver returned with an aim to win the championship title, but failed to attain competitive results and was completely outclassed by his teammate, Nico
Rosberg during the last three seasons.
Even though, the seven-time world champion performed comparatively better in this year as he secured an impressive third podium finish in the European Grand Prix. However, he couldn’t get the desired results for his team and faced immense technical and tyre
management issues which hindered his performance throughout the year.
Therefore, Ecclestone believes that the record championship holder should not have returned to the sport as the Brackley based team didn’t have the car which could match the pace of the top contenders.
“With hindsight Schumacher shouldn't have started,” Ecclestone said.
“How would he have performed if he was in a Red Bull? Or a Ferrari? I suppose when he went there [to Mercedes] he expected the team to do a lot better than they have,” he said.
It will be important to note that the 43-year-old decided to say goodbye to the sport after the news of Lewis Hamilton’s move to the Silver Arrows was confirmed.
There have been a lot of speculations that Schumacher left the sport because Mercedes have signed a contract with Hamilton for the next season. However, the 82-year-old claimed that the most celebrated driver in the history of F1 was going to leave anyway
at the end of this year.
“I think Schumacher was going to go anyway [despite the Hamilton move]. Hamilton had a number of options: stop [at McLaren], go to a team which was much worse than Mercedes or go to Mercedes,” he added.
Team principal of Mercedes, Ross Brawn paid tribute to the living legend and declared him as the best driver of the last century. On the other hand, Schumacher expressed that he is very happy with his overall achievements until now.
