Bernie Ecclestone urges Michael Schumacher to stay in Formula 1 as team principal after retirement
The chief of Formula 1 Management Bernie Ecclestone has recently revealed that he urged the seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher to stay in the sport as a team principal after his retirement as a driver.
“I can not see Michael leaving Formula One until he believes that the team is not competitive and he really thinks it's time to go. [When he stops] he should run a team. With his experience and his talent, he would be first class,” he said.
Schumacher retired from Formula 1 back in 2006 initially and even after that, he was present at most of the venues for the races weekends with team Ferrari as a supporter and an active helper.
He admitted that he just cannot leave Formula 1 as a result of which, an opportunity of driving for his friend Ross Brawn’s team tempted him a lot. He then rejoined the sport with Mercedes GP in 2010 and now, his contract with the team is valid until 2012.
Either way, Ecclestone claims that Schumacher has a big career ahead of him and he is one of the most ideal candidates for a future team principal in the sport as he is one of the most experienced and legendary drivers in the history of Formula 1.
Brawn on the other hand claims that the former world champion still has the capability of winning titles in the years to come and that he should focus on his driving skills with Mercedes GP.
“Michael is a great driver. But what is not seen and what also made him a multiple world champion is his work with the team behind the scenes. If we can give him a car with the potential to fight for the championship, then I have no doubt that he will be
in a position to win his eighth title,” said Brawn.
Despite the fact that Schumacher has not been able to perform at his best in the sport since his return, he claims that he will stay with Mercedes GP at least until the end of 2012.
