Bernie Ecclestone willing to fight against four-cylinder engine plan by 2013 Formula 1 season
Formula 1 management chief Bernie Ecclestone has recently stated that he is going to fight against the ‘four cylinder engines’ plan that is expected to come to effect starting from the 2013 Formula 1 season as he believes that it is going affect the sport
negatively.
Most of the teams and the governing body are supporting this change however, they believe that this ‘change’ would decrease the yearly budget of the teams and the sport in general vitally since the new turbo-charged four cylinder engines are very fuel efficient.
“I meet people worldwide in all different walks of life - sponsors, promoters and journalists and I think there are two things that are really important for Formula One. One is Ferrari and second is the noise. People love and get excited about the noise,”
Ecclestone told the media.
However, Ecclestone has recently stated that this would risk one of the most vital factors why the spectators come to watch the sport live at each venue that is the noise of a V8 engine. The sound of the engine creates a roar that every Formula 1 fan dreams
to listen to live one day and if the FIA takes that away from the sport, then most of the fans will consider watching the sport at home or maybe not at all.
“People who have never been to a Formula One race, when they leave you ask them what (they liked) and they say 'the noise,” Bernie added.
Reports suggest that Ferrari are also against this development as they believe that it is going to affect the worth of the sport vitally. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo gave many statements against this development and stated that the FIA should come
up with a better idea regarding these regulations if they want to move forward with this idea officially.
Other than that, since the sport is reintroducing devices like the Kinetic Energy Recovery System and adjustable rear wings just to make the sport more entertaining and dramatic, the FIA should also consider the fact that racing will not be entertaining
if they decrease the power of the engines and take away the environment of the sport.
One can debate on the fact that the sport does not want to lose its ‘entertainment factor’ as the FIA claims that these engines are going to be efficient which means that they might be powerful as well but not as much as that of a V8 engine.
Other than that, Bernie revealed that he does not agree with the president of the FIA Jean Todt on this idea and he is going to fight for it or maybe advise a better rule regarding this matter.
