Bernie Ecclestone worried over 2013 engine changes
The 80-year-old boss of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) Bernie Ecclestone has been quite energetic and enthusiastic about the future of Formula 1.
He came up with many ideas for newer venues for the sport in order to expand it all around the world. Some of those ideas were not as “awesome” as they sounded but still his contribution in 2010 was highly appreciated by most of the FIA officials.
It was recently revealed by the FIA that the year 2013 will be one of the most groundbreaking and revolutionary years in the sport’s history. It plans to make Formula 1 “greener” due to the economic problems the world is currently going through.
According to the FIA’s official rules and regulations report, Formula 1 cars are expected to use a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine in 2013. This would obviously make the cars more efficient but would decrease the adrenaline level of the sport.
Bernie Ecclestone is very concerned about this change. “I am worried about the sound, which in formula one has been so unique ... Hopefully there will be more than a faint hum. I don't care whether it's 1.6 or 1.8 litre engines - I'm worried about the sound. If we lose the sound of Formula One, we will be losing a great deal,” Ecclestone admitted.
Many people including Niki Lauda are not happy with this development and they believe that the FIA can come up with a better option than a four-cylinder engine.
The sound of a Formula 1 car is one of the main reasons why the crowd enjoys watching a Formula 1 race live.
However, the FIA president Jean Todt believes that the engines will not affect the “feel” of the sport in any way and insists that they must be used in 2013 for the betterment of the game.
"With the new rules, the FIA wants to send a strong message about Formula One. It is the pinnacle of motor sport and the smaller engine is very important for the manufacturers. I can guarantee that the formula one car for the 2013 season will be very exciting and produce a great sound,” said Jean.
