  1. Sarcoidosis sometimes needs no treatment at all, often needs only inhaled steroids, and occasionally requires systemic steroids. If he needed systemic steroids, they'd be a factor in decreasing his immune response to the pneumonia. But my understanding was that his sarcoid was quiscent and not related to his final illness. But I have to admit to not paying much attention.

    At any rate, it's a good reminder that pneumonia isn't to be taken  lightly. Though most cases can be treated with a few pills on an outpatient basis, it's never stopped being a killer, and with some of the recent antibiotic resistance problems, it's not getting any easier.

    From the looks of some of your answers, I have to say I wish medicine were as simple and straightforward as non-medical people think it is.

  3. He died from complications of pneumonia and he was 50 years old. So you are right about the pneumonia.
