Bernina Deco 650 Top thread is winding around the...

Question

I have a Bernina Deco 650 that I bought used about 5 years ago and I pulled it out today to use it for the first time. I am doing redwork christmas designs on muslin. The top thread keeps getting wound around the bobbin and the machine stops and I have to cut the fabric to get the hoop off. Any suggestions? What thread should I use (top and bobbin), what stabalizer should I use. This is going to be put into a quilt.
