Berrick Barnes to be sidelined for a longer period – Super Rugby update
Berrick Barnes the fly half for Waratahs has declared that he is no hurry to come back to the squad.
The fear of getting another blow on the head might mean a long-term injury and absence from the rest of the Super Rugby season.
It was Barnes’ second injury and the 24-year-old had to suffer through this for the second time in a single month. First, the knock on the head and then the stray elbow during the triumph against Brumbies, both of them have left an alarming bell ringing
over Waratahs head.
Barnes picked up the knock on the head in February in a clash against the Reds. He will be witnessing his side taking on the Western force this week. He will not be risking his fitness for a single clash and will save his fitness for the long run in Super
15.
While talking to press he said, “I have had a couple of concussions in a row, and I've had a history of them. At the moment, I don't feel right. The reality is if I get hit in the head in the next coming week, we're talking months off to the whole season.”
Mentioning his fears and people’s assumptions, he said, “I am not concerned long term at this stage, but it has been brought to the forefront, the risks with head injuries, and it could potentially curtail my career, and that is not what I want.”
More importantly, the upcoming World Cup is also a major concern for all the international players and injuries in club matches at this moment might cost them and their respective national teams. He is focused on playing, but for now the major concern for
him is hundred percent recovery from an injury which he picked two weeks back and is still lingering in his nightmares.
He stated, “Until the medical staff clear it up, only I will know when that is, but it is hard to lift weights. I had a concussion in 2009, and I was fine to come back then. I have just felt a bit more after this one.”
