Bert Sugar says Floyd Mayweather may never fight again
Prized boxing historian Bert Sugar believes Floyd Mayweather Jr. may never fight again.
In an article recently posted on The Examiner, Sugar is quoted as saying: “He's been called Floyd 'Maynever'. He may never fight again. He didn’t seem to want to fight Manny Pacquiao and he may never fight again depending on the charges.”
Mayweather was charged with grand larceny and battery in mid-September for a dispute with on-and-off girlfriend Josie Harris. He allegedly broke into Harris’s home and stole her IPhone, only to return and batter her in front of their three children. Mayweather
awaits a court date.
In 2005 Harris recanted under oath her previous testimony about similar allegations she had filed against Mayweather that year. This would seem to be a godsend for Mayweather’s lawyer this time around to poke holes in Harris’s case. The difference is that
this time the District Attorney’s office has testimonials from Mayweather’s children verifying Harris’s claims.
“I can’t comment on his legal issue, I’m not a psychiatrist,” Sugar concluded. “But he does seem to have problems.”
If Mayweather is slapped with the maximum number of charges, he could face up to 30 years in prison. That would blow any comparison to Mike Tyson’s prison years out of the water by a long, long shot.
For his last few fights, Mayweather’s contract-based promotional company has been Golden Boy Promotions. They have been seeking a fight with Top Rank’s Manny Pacquiao for the better part of two years. The two camps have had little success, though generated
enough drama for a weekly marathon on Oprah. Golden Boy is currently engaged in a lawsuit with Top Rank, the details of which suggest Top Rank owes Golden Boy millions for their legal right to a percentage of Manny Pacquiao’s earnings.
Sugar was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005. He has written over 80 books on boxing and is considered a foremost authority.
