The former Germany boss reckons that Die Mannschaft will need to be strong defensively in order to become this year’s European champions.
The one-time FIFA World Cup winner with Germany, Berti Vogts, believes that Germany can win this year’s European championships if they work hard on their defence. He was talking ahead of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904’s International Friendly against
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 on Wednesday, February 29, at the Weserstadion in Bremen. He feels that the clash will be a great test of Germany’s strength and character.
Vogts stated that Die Mannschaft have been in sublime form in the past 18 months and admitted that the side has a terrific opportunity to win the European Championship, having last won the competition in 1996.
Incidentally, Vogts was the last manager to win silverware with the DFB-Eleven and was part of the team that lifted the 1996 crown.
The 65-year-old claimed that Germany are definitely one of the favourites to win this year’s competition. He predicted that the reigning European champions, Spain, will make it to the finals alongside Germany and stated that Joachim
Low’s side will finish at the top.
While talking to reporters during the Azerbaijan-India friendly, the former West Germany defender further added:
"After 1996 I think the time is right for Germany. Normally Germany is always a big favourite and maybe we have to look to the final against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011. I'd be very happy if Germany won. They are in a very tough group against Holland,
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 and the most important match is that first game against the Portuguese. I cross my fingers for the Germans.”
On the other hand, he advised the Germans to concentrate hard on their defence. Vogts mentioned that the attackers and the midfielders also need to assist the back four if Germany are to make their dreams come true this year.
"Our only problem is defending and by that I mean it's not only the defence at fault, but when you lose the ball up front in an attacking movement you have to go back and help to defend,” Vogts concluded.
Germany are placed in Group B alongside Portugal, Denmark and the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753 and will get their campaign underway against the Portuguese on Saturday, June 9.
