Berto vs. Ortiz in jeopardy as the former suffers arm injury – Boxing news
Andre Berto injured his arm on Monday while training for his big match against Victor Ortiz, former welterweight champion, at the Ten Goose Gym in Van Nuys, California with trainer Tony Morgan.
Ortiz was taken to the MRI for a thorough check up. As of now, the bout between Ortiz and Berto scheduled for February 11, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, is now in jeopardy.
Sources involved in organising the fight revealed the news. According to one prominent source, “He had to go the hospital to get it checked out and he is hurt. I know the fight is in jeopardy of not happening on that date. It didn't sound good.”
Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, revealed that he has been in touch with Berto’s adviser, Al Haymon, while he was with Berto at the hospital. He further said that he was informed Berto was going through an MRI exam in order to know the damage
but at that time it was not known. As for whether the fight will be postponed or not, Richard said that it depends on how severe the injury is.
Similarly, another source asserted, “When one of the guys in the fight is in the hospital for an arm injury two weeks before the fight, that is bad news.”
Currently, Berto holds 28 wins, 1 loss and 22 knockouts in his portfolio, whereas Ortiz has 29 wins, 3 losses, 2 draws and 22 knockouts in his portfolio. It should be noted here that Berto had given up his belt in order to have a title rematch with Ortiz
for Showtime instead of going for a title defence fight against Randal Bailey. Berto had won his 147-pound title in September last year.
Therefore, this match is of high importance to Berto than to Ortiz and due to the former’s injury things can get a bit troublesome. If the fight is postponed or does not take place as scheduled than Berto will be the one suffering for it as Ortiz has nothing
to lose.
According to Richard, “We will probably make a formal announcement of what's going on sometime on Tuesday.”
