Beside Raid and keeping a clean house, what is cheap and kills roaches?

My brother has old wooden cabinets and I am trying to get them redone. I was just told that paper articles, old, worn wall paper and dampness will create roaches. There is a large, tremendous manifestation. We can't get an exterminator out until Monday. We need help now.

idk but try not to step on them because if you kill it with your shoe and the roach has eggs in it then the eggs get on the bottom of your shoe and get tracked through out the whole house. So after all the roaches are gone  (from the exterminator) the eggs will hatch and the roaches will be back.

I thought the catnip sounded good b/c it's cheap and you can buy a bag at the store all ready to go and then also buy a little catnip plant and plant it in the backyard or even a small pot inside and just tear off pieces and dry them yourself for in the future to make sure they stay away. Baking soda recipes do work as well.
