  1. For something a little closer to home, I really enjoyed the ethnography "With No Direction Home: Homeless Youth on the Road and In the Streets" about homeless kids in the U.S.A. "Tricking and Tripping: Prostitution in the Era of AIDS" by Claire E. Sterk is a really fascinating case study of prostitutes in New York City and Atlanta.  Also, "The Rashaayda Bedouin: Arab Pastoralists of Eastern Sudan" is really good. It's written by an American professor who completely assimilated into the nomadic group of Bedouin in Sudan with whom he lived for three years. Oh yeah  "Guest of the Sheik" is really good too.

  2. anything by Stephen King.............
