This is a repost of an older question, but with an exception.

Not counting cell phones. Repeat NOT COUNTING CELL PHONES.

I make that exception because 90% of the responers chose cell phones.

I'd like to know what each of us thinks is the one worst or most unsafe driving characteristic of the drivers in your area of the world. Please only list one and try not to make it a "pet peeve". Also please start off with what area of the world you're from.

For instance. I drive primarily in southern New England section of the United States. I think the most unsafe habit people have here is lack of lane discipline. Whether it is driving in the wrong lane on the highway or straddling two lanes on a country road. Most multi-car accidents and traffic jams seem to be caused by this bad habit.

I welcome your comments, it will be interesting to compare my observations with people from other places.

Please add details, if you feel your statement needs a longer explanation.

  1. here in eastern usa there are two. Not using turn signals  And driving same speed on 4 lane highway in inside lane when it should be for faster passing cars zone lane.

  2. I saw a guy eating a bowl, not a cup-of-noodles, but a ceramic bowl, with ramen in it, with a fork. On I-70.  Steering with his knees.. lol..

But yeah, Cell phones definatly win, but..  I think Eating is the next one up.

  3. I'm in Dallas, Tx. Let's see,... Impatience?

Going with impatience, I had a guy floor his conversion van around me to nearly roll it in a left turn 1/4 mile away. On another street near home, we've discussed putting our own speed bumps out. And after coming to a complete stop at a four way stop, I watched a local woman blast through like the sign wasn't there. (The sign's been there longer than she's been driving.)

Getting too interested in what's going on inside the car, (not just a cell phone,) to pay attention to actually driving the car. I had a teenager, with her best friend in the front seat and three much younger kids, (10-12,) in the backseat turn left into me on a residential street after she'd pulled to the curb and stopped as I went around her.

And I've been seeing road rage build for years. I've now been chased by someone to obsessed with getting revenge on me for either a completely innocent infraction on my part, or not letting them commit a massively illegal infraction on there part. And I've been shot at more than a time or two.

And combined with in car distraction, before we all had cell phones, I recall the case of a guy and his girlfriend that were killed due to stereo volume. At a railroad crossing in a rural area, without lights or arms, the only reason for them to have been hit by the train was because they couldn't hear the horn. I live a mile from a freight yard and can tell you which street the locomotive is crossing from here at my desk.

And as to pet peeves, I have so many it's tough to pick. I'm just glad I don't have to feed all of those pets.

  4. i feel der is significantly lacking of highway patrol in area.  here in california is no joke. before u noe it ur busted. here alot of people from other country brings their bad driving habit as well. so totally agree with you. no wonder there is much road rage!

  5. Dallas, TX

Putting on make-up while driving.  I come up to a red light and i watch other females putting powder on or mascara.  I think it cause more traffic and issues that I really do not want to deal with in the mornings.

  6. Driving slow in the left lane on the highway instead of the right. Also, cutting me off (a given) and stopping in the middle of the intersection - people do it all the time around here and, I imagine, everywhere.  IQ tests should be required with driving exams; most of these mistakes are just common sense.

  7. Tailgating

  8. in my neighbor hood, rarely anyone stops at the stopsigns, theres nothing other than that though.

  9. I remember when it started.  People called it the "California

Stop" and laughed at how often vehicles with that state plate

failed to stop completely at posted signs or red traffic lights.

A decade later nobody is laughing because so many Non-

California license plates daily ignore all stop signs and blow

through red lights with increasing frequency.  I've begun to write various elected officials urging that citizens pass drug and DMV driving test every five years or lose their license.

  10. letting old people who don't know how to use their turning signals, can't see, and don't know how to use the accelerator keep their licenses.

  11. Reading the newspaper, putting on makeup, eating, writing notes, and shaving. People have been doing these things while driving for many years - long before cell phones were invented. Any one of them is far more dangerous than talking on a phone. Yet nobody thought anything of it then, and they still don't today. They only blame phones.

  12. anything that has to do with EZ-PASS  on any toll roads, theres no such thing as courtesy left , its all balls to the walls and the h**l with you
