Besides speed, what are the advantages of long skis?

A longer ski is inherently more stable than the same ski model in a shorter length.  This is the reason that high speed (downhill) race skiis were so long. The new designs allow the same stability and surface area by being wider over it's whole length.  A shorter ski is easier to turn just because of the shorter lever arm around the foot. The tune of a ski, will allow it to start a turn easier or harder for the same length.  The new shapes allow for a more stable carve to the ski.

Powder skis are generally longer lengths (as well as being lots wider) both help with flotation.
