  1. Vary your swim workouts by mixing in sprint sets with lots of rest and distance sets.  200's can be particularly nasty depending on the send off.  Also work on your technique and do drills to work on parts of a stroke.  Google "front quadrant swimming".

  2. bench press and work on your arm muscles and pecs

  3. Well it kind of depends on what stroke you are doing...

Whatever stroke you are doing you want to focus on building those muscles.

For Backstroke you are going to want to focus on building your deltoids and biceps... maybe even your traps.

For Breaststroke work on your triceps and biceps.

For Butterfly definitely work on your trapezius and deltoid muscles.  They are very important.  And your pecs.

For Freestyle work on neck muscles for breathing and biceps and triceps.

For any stroke though you are going to want to work on building your leg strength.  You can do squats or just do some running.  Even go to the gym and use the machines there.  You're going to want to focus most of your energy on your legs in my opinion because they are your "motors".  Also work on core muscles because you need them for stabilization.

You could also use a body suit to make your self glide smoother through the water or shave off any hair like on your legs and arms, it sounds dumb but guys used to do that on big meet days and knock seconds off their time.  It doesn't seem like a lot but if you're a swimmer you know that every little second counts.

  4. cross training can help...

try boxing as it is supposed to use the same muscles as swimming dose. mabye try getting a swimming coach and telling him what you want to achieve and get him to help you, plan a program suited for your needs and abilities,

    hope that helped!!

    :)

  5. Other cardio exercises such as running, pilates, jump rope, etc.

Strength-building exercises like lifting weights, pilates, yoga.

It can feel silly to do something that seems unrelated to swimming, but cross training really does work to improve overall strength and endurance, which will greatly benefit your swimming.

  6. Attend a swimming class. Using correct technique will make you a faster swimmer.

  7. go running and play badminton

  8. go running, build endurance, also some weightlifting may help as well.

  9. If you have a swim club in your municipality (school,  university or whatever), go take a lot at the way they prepare themselves. Not only with floor exercises but also with special training methods in the pool (sometimes, from the block, their feet are restrained in a sort of bungee cord which help them develop strength when they jump in and try to extend their reach). You can also do "mundane"  things like biking or running up hill. Extremely good for cardiovascular stuff.

  10. Regular stretching (ankle flexibility in particulr is important). Yoga can really help.

Also weight training (moderate weight) can help you, but be careful not to get too bulky because this can add drag.

  11. Lift weights, run to get in shape, work on your stroke and form a ton, eat healthy

  12. do sprints and distance running.  try to hold your brwath when you are in the water becasue that way you will go faster and not need as much oxegen.  never breath within the walls because that will make you faster.  try to sprint a practice, it will be hard but it will make you better.  bench and ask your coach to push you, s/he will be happy to help becuase almost all coaches want you to rock.  if it helps you when you are in the water do not think of anyting else.
