I have a 2003 short shaft 25hp motor and have purchased the spacer to convert the motor to a long shaft motor. After taking the four bolts off the lower unit is still attached. What do I need to do to be able to remove the unit?

  1. Put the motor in neutral and disconnect the shifting linkage and it should come down.

  2. Hi Paul!

You have to locate the shift linkage, disengage it completely and then you should be able to remove the lower unit. THEN you're going to have to buy an extended linkage. With the added length of shaft... your existing linkage won't be long enough!

    Hope this helps

  3. what motor is it?

The shift linkage on some 2-cyl motors is behind a plate on the port side of the lower unit under the antiventilation plate.

Some motors require you to remove the torque tab, others have one or two additional bolts under the A/V plate.

He who repairs his own engine without a service manual has a fool for a mechanic!
