  1. Most people would tell you to stay away from a Nissan/Tohatsu motor but i have had a 50hp Nissan 4 stroke for 6 years and have had no problems what so ever. all i have done is routine matinance.

  2. I agree with Mark, that all of the major manufactures have excellent 4 stroke engines.

The main thing that you have to be concerned with is dealer support, not only right where you live or boat mainly but across North America.

Mercury and Honda have the largest dealer network with factory trained tecs. with a ready supply of parts so that your unit won't be tied up for long if you do need repairs.

  3. Mostly all of the manufacturers make powerful, reliable and efficient four-cycle outboards of this size. My pick would be Yamaha's fuel-injected outboards. In my experience in the marine business, I have yet to find a Yamaha that DOESN'T want to run, whether new or old. On top of that, they're fuel injected so you'll never have to pump another bulb, choke another engine and smell all of the smoke. They're also powerful, quiet and good on fuel. Go with the Yamaha..you might pay a little more, but it's worth every penny.

  4. Everyone is spot on.  Merc or Yamaha.  They are both "EFI" and Honda is Carb.

Also, Yamaha and Mercury were tied together up until about a year ago.  For instance, Mercury 75 and 90hp was a Yamaha powerhead.  They shared throughout the line.

What happened is Mercury accused Yamaha of dumping engines in the USA.  So they went to Federal Court and they said there is no proof of that and sent Mercury back to Fond Du lac, Wi.  They didn't completely break ties, but there is some friction between the two right now.

Also, I have been in the Marine Industry for about 10 years now and last year we had 7 Yamaha Warranty Claims and 154 Mercury.  (we sell about 1200 boats a year) They are both good, but look at the numbers and that is what I would go with.

    Good luck and enjoy!

stay away from force and volvo penta (junk)
