Best Action/Adventure Nominees - Golden Joystick Awards 2011 –Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood - Part 1
Every year the Golden Joystick Awards provides gamers with a platform to vote for the best games they have played across various categories. The winner can truly be called the ‘gamers’ champion’.
This year is not different, with the nominees for the various categories already up and voting well under way. The final winners will not be announced any time soon, so it would be wise to go through the various nominees.
We have already gone through, in quite some detail, the nominees for the Best Shooter category and saw how tough competition is there.
This time around we will be looking at the nominees for the Best Action/Adventure game. We can bet a fair amount of honey that the reader instantly though of Naughty Dog’s stellar Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Sadly though that game has already done the rounds
in the previous year’s edition, but that does not mean there is a shortage of titles to choose from.
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
Dubbed by many as Assassin’s Creed Part 2, Episode 2, Brotherhood continues the story of Ezio Auditore de Firenze, the charmingly deadly assassin as he continues on his quest to hunt down the Templars and look for answers to the questions raised in his previous
outing on consoles.
The game felt like a smoothed out, more fluid version of the Assassin’s Creed two. It included some pretty neat horseback combat sequences, the trademark Assassin’s Creed ‘leap of faith’ returned as well and the combat was improved and made more streamlined.
Not only that, but the game’s most significant enhancement was the fact that Ezio could now recruit assassins to join him on his quest. These allies could be trained in various skills and would help Ezio in various scenarios.
Yet, the real surprise came in the form of the game’s online multiplayer component. Not everyone was sure as to how Assassin’s Creed’s gameplay would translate into the world of online multiplayer, but it has to be said that Ubisoft, the game’s developer
and publisher, managed to pull it off in spectacular fashion.
The cat and mouse styled multiplayer gave players a new kind of tension as they looked to hunt down their target before another assassin hunted them down. In fact, the mode went down so well that expansion packs were released to enhance the multiplayer experience.
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood also continued Desmond Miles’s story as he attempted to harness the bleeding effect which he became more conscious of by the end of the previous game.
Our verdict: An early favourite to win the golden joystick for the Best Action/Adventure game category. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood was a worthy addition to the franchise and it delivered in terms of what fans have come to expect from the series.
The fact that the game is multiplatform as well, means that it will rake in the votes from gamers on almost every platform. While it would be slightly premature to declare this game the outright winner, seeing the pedigree of its competition, one can mark
it down as a Top 3 finisher for certain.
