Best Action/Adventure Nominees - Golden Joystick Awards 2011 – Dead Rising 2 - Part 2
The Best Shooter category may the most mainstream when it comes to the demographic of gamers who play shooters, but to say the Action/Adventure genre is just as popular would not be too far from the truth.
In fact, with the pedigree of the nominees in the aforementioned, Best Action/Adventure category, the competition is just as fierce here, as it is between Bungie’s Halo: Reach and Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops.
After having gone through one of the nominees, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, in some detail in the previous article, it is now time to turn our attention towards a game which gave everyone a new reason to go visit a mall: Zombies.
Dead Rising 2
While the original Dead Rising game was a mixed bag for many, mostly down to its 'love it or hate it' nature, its developers saw enough potential for a sequel and hence we were blessed with Dead Rising 2.
With a similar premise, Zombies and a shopping mall, well actually more than one shopping mall and a few hotels thrown in for good measure as well, the scale of the game was fairly impressive, especially if one takes into account the amount of shops players
could visit and the amount of objects players could interact with.
The Psychopath battles, which are the game’s version of boss battles, also returned, as did the task of rescuing survivors; the most memorable one was where the player had to dress down in his underwear to save one of the survivors.
The giggles that followed as we ran through a zombie infested city in our underwear may have been a tad premature but it was fun nonetheless, and that is what Dead Rising 2 was good at: Fun.
The multiplayer mode was an addition to the franchise and it did not catch on as well as the developer would have liked. The mode saw players compete against each other as they looked to see who could kill the most number of the undead.
However, the fact that the currency earned from the online game modes was automatically transferred to the single player campaign and vice versa was a feature that many appreciated.
Yet, it has to be said that cooperative multi-player was where Dead Rising 2 hit the nail of the head. Inviting a friend over to join your single player campaign and help you out was a masterstroke. Not only was it a huge help, but it also provided ample
opportunity to dress up in eccentric costumes and goof around.
Which, when surrounded by zombies, becomes twice as hilarious as it does in other games.
Our verdict: Dead Rising 2 is a game that does not take itself too seriously but at the same time is no joke. It should finish high in the positions table when voting concludes but again it will not finish in the top spot, largely thanks to an Italian with
two hidden blades up his sleeves.
