Best Action/Adventure Nominees - Golden Joystick Awards 2011 – Infamous 2: Part 3
The Action/Adventure genre generally has plenty of depth and layers to them and more often than not, it also has more substance than the typical first person shooter game. Yes, that may have been a slightly harsh comparison but we all know there is some
truth behind it.
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Dead Rising 2 were completely different games, yet the one thing they had in common was the fact that they gave players an element of choice. Players could choose to recruit assassins in the former and could choose to ignore
the storyline completely in the latter.
Another game which brings in a slightly different element of choice is Sucker Punch’s sequel to their comic book styled original PlayStation exclusive.
InFamous 2
InFamous 1 took the gaming world by surprise. Its unique art style, moral choices and intriguing storyline with one of the best twists in video gaming history, which left everyone with their eyes wide open in awe.
So, Sucker Punch really had to deliver with their second title, which in more ways than one they did. The visuals were improved, the combat was tweaked and the scale of the playable area was increased.
The moral choices, which were an integral part of the first game, returned in all their glory and players could once again decide if they wanted to be the fiendishly cool, red powered Cole or the smoothly heroic, blue powered one.
Sucker Punch also took the boss fights to a whole new level, with the introduction of some of the biggest bosses in open world Action/Adventure games. Throughout the game various monstrosities would emerge and take more damage than the American economy ever
did, before finally going down.
The sense of satisfaction players got from toppling the giants was second to none and truly made InFamous 2 a gratifying and thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Add in the PlayStation Move support and the ability to make one’s own custom missions and share them online for players to play and the gaming world suddenly had itself another Little Big Planet type community.
Playing, Creating and Sharing much like SacBoy does in his universe, InFamous 2 suddenly had players doing the same thing, expanding the scope and adding a few more years to the game’s life span. There were a few criticisms though, as the protagonist’s voice
and look were altered for the second game, something that did not go down too well with the fans. Also, the game became slightly repetitive between the intense boss-fights, which made the game feel like it dragged on slightly.
Our verdict: a thoroughly enjoyable game with plenty of depth and satisfying action, yet we just cannot see it topping some of the other titles in the same category. Add in the fact the game is a PlayStation exclusive. Having said all that, it should still
finish in the top half.
