Best Action/Adventure Nominees - Golden Joystick Awards 2011 – LittleBigPlanet 2 - Part 5
Video games are all about providing those who play them with an experience. The majority of the games follow fairly linear paths and are more of a publisher to gaming community type relationship. However, the concept of games becoming self sufficient in
terms of content, may not be something new but it has taken off significantly since Media Molecule launched their instant hit Little Big Planet.
While that was a great game in its own right, it left many wondering how the developers could top and already brilliant concept with their sequel.
Little Big Planet 2
The adorable Sack Boy and his Sack friends returned to PlayStation 3 consoles earlier this year with a large amount of speculation surrounding if Little Big Planet 2 would simply be the same game as its predecessor or would it take the series to a new level.
The first game allowed players to create their own levels and it was so successful that there are over two-million user-created levels to date and the count is rising by the hour. Media Molecule decided to take things further by allowing gamers to create
their own games in the follow up.
First person shooters, Real Time Strategy (RTS), sports games and racing games are just a few of the possibilities when it comes to what players can do in the game. Not only that, but all the levels from the previous game were automatically available to
players of the second game, meaning a huge database of freely downloadable content for every player.
Add in the fact that the developers are still looking to add motion controlled support to the game, by taking advantage of Sony’s PlayStation Move peripheral and you have one of the most complete PlayStation packages in terms of games to date.
In fact, the LBP series is one of the exclusive titles which actually is responsible for boosting sales of Sony PlayStation 3 console as there is nothing like it on any other current generation console so far.
Our verdict: The amount of user-generated content and the fact that Little Big Planet 2 is a known console seller means that it should end up high in the positions once the voting concludes. The game is different from anything else out there in the market
today and not only has it perfected a new genre but created a platform where users will be able to keep the game fresh themselves.
The only thing holding Sack Boy back however is the fact that it is a single platform game and more people will have played Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and other titles, so when it comes to votes, more voters will opt for titles they have played.
There we have it, another title to the already long and impressive list of Action/Adventure games which we have analysed. Yet, will Little Big Planet 2 be able to earn enough votes against the likes of Ezio Auditore, L.A. Noire and company? Only time will
tell.
