Question:

Best Australia City to Study Abroad In?

For one semester in college, I plan to study abroad in Australia. Now the gut city to study in is Sydney, but I have heard that Melbourne is far better than Sydney. I have also heard talk about Brisbane. Now the city I plan to live in needs to be clean, have a crazy night- life, and also needs to have easily accessible beaches. Keep in mind that I am a college student. I have only heard good things about Australian cities, but need to know which is the best for me. By the way, on a couple long weekends, I plan to travel by train to some other cities, so there is no need to say "Study in Sydney, because you need to go there." Thanks for your Help!

PS Try not to be biased!!

  1. If you want a city with good, accessible surf beaches, it has to be Sydney as Brisbane and Melbourne are both a long way from surf beaches. Sydney also has the best and craziest nightlife though Melbourne's is also great. Sydney's weather is better than Melbourne's - not as stinking hot in summer and not as miserably cold in winter.

While you're in Oz, make sure you come to the Gold Coast and perhaps points north, but flying is far better and cheaper than taking the train. Don't miss Melbourne; it's a great place but if its beaches you want, do your course in Sydney.

  2. Seen them all-here are my rankings:

1/.Sydney-fantastic weather and great topography and culture

    2/Melbourne- good for AFL football

3/ Perth- nice open city with a great Mediterranean climate

4/ Hobart:Small but  quiet and good location

5/. Brisbane- a bit hot and humid in the summer

6/ Adelaide-not much going for it

7/. Darwin- a bit too redneck

    8/ Canberra- architecturally deprived

  3. i wud say sydney or melbourne, but all cities have a great nightlife. i think sydney has the best beaches.  but u have to remember that australia is a huge country, it wud take a days travel atleast to travel from sydney to melbourne. or sydney to brisbane.

  4. OK, I've lived in all three, Melbourne to me has more of a cultured European feel, crazy nightlife, beaches close but surf you'll have to travel a bit.  Pick your seasons well, stinking hot in summer, cold winter.  Sydney is fantastic, good beaches within a train ride, surf beaches and all that goes with, very fast pace and make sure you have plenty of cash.  Brisbane is more layed back and spread out, it's nickname is BrisVegas, the Gold coast beaches less than an hour by car, u can get a train/bus from Brisbane, northern beaches a bit more time north of Brisbane.  Honestly, you would be better getting cheap internal flights to other cities for the long weekends (maybe $150 return and less if you book) as train travel between cities is expensive and extremely time consuming, Syd to Melb, 11hrs+, Syd-brisb 12-14.  I think you would have a blast in Syd or Melb, our internal airlines are Jetstar, Virgin Blue, Qantas, Tiger check prices.  Good Luck x

  5. Sydney is a great city, it is the most expensive out of all cities in australia to live. The harbour is beautiful, very easy access to beachs, especially if you live in the northern beaches or eastern suburbs areas of sydney. These include suburbs such as manly, seaforth, bondi, and waverly is slightly inland, but still close to bondi beach. some more suburbian areas that are good are double bay, rose bay, and vaucluse. all very expensive. and most of the lower north shore area is beautiful to live. again very expensive. the inner west suburbs such as balmain are also good. sydney has great nightlife and is located between brisbane and melbourne therefore visiting both would be easy. the lifestyle in sydney is more fast paced than melbourne.

Melbourne is also a great city, it is considered the shopping capital of australia, and the nightlife also good in melbourne. to get to good beaches you would have to travel over an hour out of melbourne. beach towns such as lorne are good for holidays. the suburbs of port melbourne and st kilda are locted on port melbourne beach, but its more like a large flat lake rather than a beach. southern and eastern suburbs of melbourne are good to live, such as toorak, south yarra, port melbourne, and albert park. melbourne has a considerably lower living cost than sydney.

  6. well if it's beaches you're after then don't go for melbourne, but Melbourne lifestyle isn't about the beaches, its about trams and cafe's and little alleyways and it's nightlife. well there are beaches on port philip bay, but I assume they are pretty dull. Melbourne people play AFL, Melbourne's population is 3.8 million.

Sydney has pretty much everything Melbourne has but beaches, and sydney doesn't have the feel of melbourne or a eureka tower or anything, but it is slightly bigger. Sydney people play Rugby League. Sydney's population is 4.2 million.

Both Sydney and Melbourne are great. If you like warm weather then Brisbane is for you, it has about 2.4 million people less than Sydney. Brisbane is about an hours drive from the gold coast which is fortunate because you can have the best of both worlds. Not as interesting as Sydney or Melbourne but it is warm. Brisbane's population is 1.8 million.

Traveling by train to other cities in Australia isn't the same as in other countries, because our cities are so far apart from each other. but if time is on your side then go for it.
