Question:

Best Beer?

Sitting in the pub on saturday with a couple of mates, whilst breezing through a pint of stella I realised i've never really thought about what beer tastes the best. Being from England, I've sampled most lagers we have such as Stella, Carling, Carlsberg, Fosters, Castlemaine, Duvel, Tennents, Orangeboom, Hurliman, Coors, Heineken etc. etc. as well as a variety of ales. What is your favourite beer and why? Please help me find the perfect beer. Maybe you Americans out there have some lovely beers I've never heard of?

  1. Bell's "Oberon" from Kalamazoo Michigan - it is a light sweeter wheat ale - orangey in color and best served with a slice of orange - the PERFECT summer beer. Available all over Michigan!

We also have a microbrewery here in Ludington, Michigan - Jamesport Brewery. They make a fantastic IPA (bitter) and Strong Scottish Ale - YUM! I am a huge fan of the sweeter pear cider too - all brewed there!

  2. I am a huge advocate of the American micro breweries. There are many world class beers brewed all over the United States.

Here inn Kalamazoo I am lucky to have Bell's just down the street. Expedition Stout is a vicious brew but oh so delicious. Two Hearted Ale in another world class brew.

Staying in Michigan Founder's Kentucky Breakfast Stout is a s good as I have ever had.

Dogfish Head in Delaware has a line up of ridiculously good beers. I have been drinking on the Indian Brown Ale as of late, mighty tasty.

Stone out of California may be the most in your face brewery out there. The swing for the fence on every brew the make.

The Brewery Ommegang in Copperstown New York does a great job on the Belgian styles.

Unibroue In Quebec, Canada has some mighty fine offerings as well.

I know there are some amazing European brews but it is hard for me to stay away from the American Micros.

  3. Coming up with a "best" is impossible because everyone has their own tastes.

Heck, even coming up with a personal favorite is hard when you consider all the amazing imported beers out there.

For example, I tried some brand that made "oatmeal beer" which tasted amazing. (Nothing like oatmeal, though.) I had never heard of it before, but it sounded interesting so I tried it and loved it.

Generally I say Guiness, but there are so many great beers out there!

  4. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a benchmark for American (California) ales. Many try to emulate its firm texture and deeply complex flavors and aromas, but few succeed.

If you can get in a bottled version, all the better. It is bottle-conditioned and superior to the draught version.

There really isn't an American lager beer that can stand up to European standards. They all fall short in my opinion.

  5. i dont really drink beer, but I have friends that drink budwieser....

  6. Samuel Adams, they have a wide variety to choose from, I prefer the Black Label. Dark beers, in my opinion are the best.  You can't get any better than home brew. it's not very difficult to do and the results can be outstanding. You can create you own. try it, you may discover a hidden talent that you can share with you mates.

  7. I have always hated "flavored" beers, but the new Michelob Ultra flavors are excellent.  My big macho fiance even likes them, and he's very picky about beer and hates fruity "girly" drinks.  There are 3 flavors:  Tuscan Orange Grapefruit," "Cactus Lime," and "Raspberry Pomegranite."  I know fruit flavored beer sounds gross, but they aren't sweet at all.  They just sort of give you a nice smooth fruity aftertaste.  They are all very light, so they're perfect for summer time at the beach or by the pool, or anywhere you're going to be outside in the hot sun.  Don't knock it til you try it!

  8. Harp + best cider magners :D:P

  9. My all time fav is by far guinness. Local brews here that I like include any in the tommyknocker line of brews, especially the maple ale. Also New Belgian Brewery brands are great, i.e. Fat Tire or Frambozen. Also Phantom Canyon is pretty tasty as well.

  10. The only good beer in the US are the small microbrews.  The National Brands like Miller, Coors, Michelob and Budweiser are awful.  The national brands use cheap rice or corn fillers rather than the healthier ingredients Europeans use; good quality takes second string to mass quantity.

My husband drinks Budweiser.  I keep telling him the only good thing that beer is good for is as fly attractrant.  The flies are attracted to the sugars in the beer.  (Seriously, I use his leftover beer and pour it into a fly trap every night)

I have no one favorite, but when I travel I enjoy the following US beers:

    Yuengling, from Pottstown, PA

    Leinenkugel from Chippewa Falls, WI

    Saranac from upstate New York

    Fat Tire from Colorado

    Shiners from Texas (great Hefeweizen)

    Goose Island from Chicago

There are so many more, many smaller ones especially n the great PacNorthwest.  (Many of the beers listed above are owned by the National Brands but allow the brwery to use the special recipes).  Boston, New York and many larger college towns have great microbreweries that serve a good hops, too.
