Question:

Best Beginning Digital SLR for price/features?

What's the best make and model of Digital SLR to purchase?

I was looking at the Olympus e-510, because it comes with two lenses...but I'm open to any suggestions.

I want one that I can use for all around photography with the stock lenses (or that is so inexpensive I can purchase decent lenses without going over $500 max). I'd like it to be sturdy, fairly easy to use (I am a technophile, so I can figure most things out pretty easily.), and good for taking decent photos at close, medium, and long range...and decent at action shots as well.

What do you all suggest?

  1. Look at the Nikon D40 with 18-55 mm lens .. is has a much larger sensor than the Olympus ... under $470 ...

You did not tell us what lenses come with the E-510 ... something tells me they are NOT Olympus lenses.

    Look here for more information

  2. Also look into the Nikon D40, D60, Canon Rebel XT, and XTi.

  3. This is a nice camera, if your heart is set on it than get it. This camera doesn't have much of a grip though. When i played with it, it seemed really awkward to hold on in your hands and shoot with it. However, this camera is a good one, because it has body-in stabilization VS. the lens stabilization on Canon And Nikon ( which are notoriously expensive ). So, IS comes with any lens you attach. However, being the Nikon owner i am, i suggest you get the Nikon d40 or the d60

Both of which are very nice cameras.

This is what i get from the d40:

You don't have to spend that much on a camera to get some really nice photographs. This camera, being around 470$, takes really nice pictures, and has a physically larger sensor than the olympus brand camera, so you can naturally get more details. Also, remember olympus' greater crop factor which makes your wide-angle lenses much longer, which isn't a good thing, it's only good with telephoto lenses because ' they are magically transformed into Much longer reach lenses' . However, if you want the olympus go for it, but if you like Nikon that would be fine too.
